Great place overall - convenient to both Kings Beach and Tahoe City. Large common space was great for our group, and the indoor fire pit was a definite bonus!

Great location in a quiet neighborhood. Good kitchen and a large great room with large windows for lots of natural light. The fireplace in the middle of the living room is a little awkward. The deck is functional but it has some loose boards. We enjoyed dinner at large dining room table. It was a fun vacation.

Very comfortable house close to the lake and a short hop to lakeside restaurants etc.

Walking distance to skipping-stone Waterman-Patton Beach and to Community Pool. Generous and dated back deck with good grill. We cooked in most nights with our large family and found the kitchen had everything we needed. Plenty of beds, afew too soft, as was the expansive couch under the wonderful picture windows. Easy key pick-up and drop-off. For our young adult folks the place was too far from town and from sandy beaches - too much driving for them. But overall we enjoyed our stay and found the place just fine for our annual multi-generational family gathering.

We were a group of 7 people, and with four bedrooms and a larg living area there was definitely enough space for us. Overall the place was a nice retreat, with a massive wood-burning fire apparatus in the middle of the living room, and a pool table for an added touch. Also had a nice selection of videos to watch, and the WiFi had excellent speed and reliability. Location is top notch--north Tahoe within minutes of Northstar and Squaw, and a short drive to groceries and restaurants. There were some aspects that could be improved, however. The upstairs bathroom is pretty small and low on space, and there seems to be a water leak from that bathroom to the one below it. Also, while the fireplace provides lots of heat on the first floor, the central heating is woefully inadequate, and as a result the two upper bedrooms are frigid when you're not under a blanket. In addition, while salt and pepper were provided, it would have been nice to have a few more kitchen amenities, such as sugar, cooking oil, spices, teabags, etc. The decor is also a bit dated, though that is admittedly a matter of personal taste. Overall, a fine place to stay but a bit of fine-tuning would make a significant difference.

Thank you for your review. We appreciated you letting us know about the leak and we had it addressed (calking gave out between the tub and floor). We noticed someone moved the beds in the upstairs bedroom over the furnace registers so that could have contributed to the lack of heat circulation upstairs. The owner put in new upgrades to the kitchen and other parts of the property since you have stayed. Please keep us in mind for future Tahoe rentals.

We rented the MacDonald house over Thanksgiving and it was absolutely fabulous. It was well stocked with wood for the oversize fireplace that the kids and adults alike thoroughly enjoyed. The pool table was also a bonus! The rooms were comfortable and although the house is dated - we felt it only added to the charm of the cabin! We would rent this house again in a heartbeat.

We had a great time staying at the MacDonald house for Labor day weekend. The house is spaced rather nicely to accommodate at least 6 people. We had no issues with water temperature or anything not working. We loved the pool table as it provided a lot of entertainment for us. It is true that that layout of the living room is a little different, with the fireplace right smack in the middle of the seating area. After a few days we got used to it, and even lit the fire one cold summer night and it was great! I'm thinking the fireplace would be even better in the winter. The one thing we wished the house provided were some beach chairs or beach towels, as that's a prime activity when visiting Tahoe in the summer. Working with this company was great as well - they were easily accessible and responded to questions and concerns rather quickly. I used to use Vrbo for all of my vacation rentals and I am thinking that I may go the real estate/property management route from now on. All in all - we would stay at MacDonald house again!

Hi Jeff from Del Mar! We're glad you enjoyed the setting at the Macdonald home. It is very nice and quiet. I'm sorry you were here to experience our little hot spell. Those high temps aren't too common which is why homes here in the Tahoe basin typically don't have air conditioning. It sounds like this may be your first experience renting a home in Tahoe. In the future you'll want to open your windows at night to let the cool air in, and close them upon waking to close in the cool air. That'll do the trick! If the rates aren't desirable, please check out the shoulder season rates which are reduced from what they are in the heart of the summer season when you came. Thank you for visiting us! We hope you'll be back soon.

This is a nice, cozy house, but large enough for a few families. Like past reviews, the amenities are pretty basic; not overly nice but comfortable. It was nice to have updated appliances in the kitchen, but it could use a few more supplies. Also nice to have updated television, dvd/vhs combo player with a few movies and pool table. It would have been nice to have a few games or a deck of cards. There was an older stereo that played cds, but would have been nice to have a way to hook up an ipod/mp3 player. The free wifi was helpful. No issues with hot water or water pressure when both showers being used simultaneously. Overall was a great place to stay if you will be out and about enjoying Lake Tahoe and need a place to regroup between activities. The property managers were very helpful and available, and I will definitely use them again.

I love the way the house is layed out. The entrance way is set up with it's stone floor and slight slope toward the center drain to be great for wet snow gear. The wall of windows was great for watching the snow fall as we sat around the fireplace in the family room. Had lots of firewood in the garage. So fun to have the pool table. Comfortable beds and nice size bedrooms. Very close to Tahoe Nordic cross country ski area. We missed having a tea kettle and could use some larger pots for our our gang of ten, but those are minor issues especially if you prefer eating out.

We had a wonderful week in Tahoe. The convenient location was perfect for our needs. We cycled, hiked, played miniature golf in the nearby Carnelian Bay. The house, though spacious, was disappointing. It was run-down with broken screens on the sliding doors, blinds that didn't raise, and a deck that felt unsafe. The beds and all the chairs were very uncomfortable and the sheets and blankets were insufficient. Finally, though the downstairs was comfortable, the upstairs was stifling with poor air circulation. Finally, the DVD player didn't play most of our Dvd's. On a positive note, the pool table was great fun, and the kitchen was reasonably well-equipped! We had a great time!

One problem was fixed within 1st hour of stay. How good is that. Billing, ease of reservation, and follow through was always excellent. We will do this again. Kitchen was excellent (newly improved), nice room in dining area, and family fireplace room. Everything worked. Bathrooms and bedrooms very clean. Outside especially the patio deck could use some TLC as the inside has. Wood was too green to burn, but we made do. Great neighborhood for walks.

Second time staying here. Comfortable home at a decent price in a quiet area. Tv was upgraded this time around. The only negatives were the shower door downstairs was broken upon arrival and the snow removal service was slow (did a lot snow shoveling to get in and out of the garage). Good place to stay if you have a dog (lots of dogs in the neighborhood). Also about equal distance between Squaw and Northstar for the skiers.

Stayed with a group of 9 friends. The place was the perfect size for us. Probably could have fit 1 or 2 more. Would definitely stay here again :)

Just returned from the Macdonald House. It is in a decent location considering it was just after much snow. 2 blocks to the highway. 9 miles from Northstar Resort & nice for snowboarding. Northstar was a big hit as the snow quality was almost perfect and the runs were wide and nicely groomed. As for the Macdonald home, it was comfortable, check in was easy, but it has some issues. 1. The fireplace which is a large round, pit surrounded by nice sofa set and room for quite a few people had a big problem with the steel grate. It is completely burned away in the middle which means to keep a fire going you are continually babysitting the fire because as the coals get going they fall down below the grate so you loose the coals. After the 3rd night I took 1 side of the outdoor barbecue grill and put over the middle and it solved the problem. An easy fix.2. The showers could use easy updates. 1st a better shower head. Both are not good. Next the shower doors need to be replaced. They are old, funky and in disrepair. Another easy fix.3. The beds are not comfortable. Very hard. The pool table is very old with tight quarters. We did enjoy the location, and the family dog enjoyed the windows all in the front for viewing outside. The home was clean, the carpeting was clean. It has a large entry with drain grate for boots & snow gear with coat hangers. This was nice.So with a couple of easy updates, the house would be much more pleasurable.

Management company is very poorly run.

Location is great, but cabin lacked a few things. There is a shortage of electrical outlets and the lighting everywhere was very poor. I appreciate economy, and use fluorescent bulbs throughout my own home, but the bulbs in the cabin were extremely dim. There is no place inside where you can read or do any work where lighting is important. The fireplace is a real detriment to conversation during the summer; it may be okay in the winter, but is in the way otherwise. The king size mattress downstairs is comfortable, but the twin beds and queen bed mattresses were lacking in comfort. There was a dead mouse in the entry when we arrived, and little propane in the tank the first night.
Manager response on 2010-07-27 - Response from Agate Bay Realty
I'm sorry you didn't have enough outlets to use. In the future please let us know if you need anything as we would be happy to bring a power strip and a lamp if needed. We will let the owner know that you found the twin beds lacking in comfort. Thank you for the information as it is very helpful. We recently had the live mice in the house exterminated, so I apologize for the one found on the stone floor entry. We appreciate your call from the home that there was just a little propane left so we could provide you with more right away. Thank you again for staying with us!

The MacDonald house is good vacation rental for a single family with a dog that just need the basics (i.e. basic cable, minimal cookware and a comfortable place to sleep). If you have stayed in upscale vacation rentals this may be a let down, if you have stayed in noisy hotels this may be the peace and quiet you need. Bottom line; a good place to stay if the more expensive vacation rentals are out of your budget.

Generally we were very happy with the house, the garage to mudroom connection was great and kept any of the snow, boots, etc from getting into the house - but having the warmth of the house. House was laid out well - very open, warm and decent furniture throughout. The main area for improvement would be with the kitchen; more baking pans for pizza and such, and generally more utensils and spices and a general upgrade to the micro/stove combination...all was workable. If these were upgraded this house would be a "Wow" vacation home. With our without the upgrade I would stay there again - overall very good house.

The home was nice for our family. It had a nice big fireplace in the livingroom where the kids loved making samores. The fireplace was cool, but it did make it difficult to watch TV and visit with other people, because the big fireplace kind of got in the way. But, the kids enjoyed it and it kept us nice and warm. This home has a nice pool table, which kept the kids occupied. The home was very dog friendly, as there were stains everywhere from where dogs had gone to the bathroom on the carpet or someone had spilled a drink. This home was perfect for someone who didn't want to have to worry about their kids spilling something on the carpet. Agate Bay Realty was very cool and nice to work with. I would definitely rent from them again. We loved the location of the house and would rent it again.

Thank you for review. We wanted to let you know the carpet normally is not in that type of condition. It was replaced just two years ago. I just love Agate Bay in general, so let me start by saying that. We've been going the past four years, and bring new friends up every year who continue to come up once we've introduced them. The bedrooms are a decent size. The two upstairs are smaller than the two downstairs. But we really just need rooms to sleep in, and so they worked great. The kitchen was a good size, the downstairs bathroom was really spacious, the one upstairs a little smaller. The shower upstairs didn't have too much room for putting our shower toiletries, so that was a little bit of a pain.None of the sliding glass doors worked, nor did the screen doors that went with them. But I loved the deck, very spacious (the patio chairs were a little outdated, though comfortable, but the table was great.)The living room was very large, very spacious. Even with the pool table and fireplace in the middle, the six boys we had (under 4yrs old) had plenty of room to run. We did find the fire place somewhat inconvenient at night when the adults wanted to sit around and talk. It was just in between everyone, so we chose to sit at the dining room table.Overall, I liked the MacDonald home and would stay there again.
